VISIT TO DEWAN FILHARMONIK PETRONAS Our first official AES activity after the formal launching of the AES Malaysia Section was hosted by Mr Wong Wing Thim, our AES Malaysia Treasurer and Chief of Sound at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, the home of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Approximately 25 of us gathered at the DFP foyer at 1pm, including a group of university students majoring in Music Technology from Putra University, being invited as part of our membership drive. Mr CK Ng, our AES Malaysia Chairman, began the afternoon with a brief talk introducing AES to these students, including mention of its achievements, activities and benefits of membership. All the students were given membership application forms.
The afternoon then commenced with a guided tour by Mr Wong. The group was taken into the concert hall and its acoustic design was explained, including opportunities for Q&A. After an enlightening half hour or so, the group was then taken to visit first the Control Room and then the Recording Studio of the hall, where further explanations were given, both by Mr Wong himself as well as by the DFP Sound Engineer, AES member Mr Sanjay. En route the group was given a glimpse inside one of the corporate suites adjacent the concert hall. The group adjourned at approximately 2.30 pm. AES Malaysia would once again like to formally thank Mr Wong Wing Thim for organising this very enjoyable and educational visit to the DFP.
